How to fix startup problems, how to solve missing or faulty tank or battle data and how to find and inspect log file. Select a troubleshooting option:
Normally reinstalling Wot Numbers don't help on solving startup issues, but of course it do not harm trying repair or reinstall (uninstall/install). It can solve some issues. However, trying to reinstall multiple times will just be a waste of time.
The application stores all application settings in the application settings folder (appsetting folder):
%appdata%\Wot Numbers
The file: "config.json" in the appsetting folder stores all startup parameters, editing this file can solve startup problems if you can find incorrect settings in it. Deleting the file prepares Wot Number for a clean startup, as it was a first time install. A new config file will automatically be created if it does not exist. For more info check the user guide: 10 - Application Settings
If you have problem after first time install, it could be that the initial database creation has failed. Deleting the config file and restarting Wot Numbers is then the best option. The system will suggest creating a new database. Important: leave your computer "alone" while it creates the database, it is a disk-intensive operation.
If deleting "config.json" does not help, checking the log file is the next step. Check the troubleshoot chapter: How to find log-file and understand content.
If log file is not present, or if the log file do not show any problems, it can be that the application terminates before logging starts. Go to Widows Event Viewer and check the application logs and look for errors. Wot Numbers requires Windows .NET 4.5 or later framework to be installed.
If Wot Numbers seems to start, but it's not visible, it could be that you monitor setup has changed. If display settings are changed in Windows, Wot Numbers can end up be positioned outside of the visible area.
Shut down Wot Numnbers. Use Notepad, or better: Notepad++, and open the Wot Numbers config.json configuration file from the folder: "%appdata%\Wot Numbers". Locate the section "posSize" in the file, and set the values for "Top" and "Left" to 0, here an example:
"posSize": { "Top": 0, "Left": 0, "Width": 800, "Height": 600, "WindowState": 0 },
Save the file and start Wot Numbers. It should not be positioned in top left corner of you monitor number 1
If an error message appear please expand the error dialog window to see the whole content. Try to understand it and take actions.
If data are missing or seems to be incorrect it could be caused by a problem with a background process. These are not always shown as a pop up message. All errors are stored to the system log file, please check the chapter How to find log-file and understand content.
You could ask for help to understand and solve problems by asking other users. Give it a try by visiting Wot Numbers Discord server.
Wot Numbers fetches tank details using Wargaming API, and uses also API to WN8/9 to rating sites for getting correct parameters for calculating the ratings.
API = Application Programming Interface, normally it is a webservice provided at a site for others to send or receive data.
New tanks might be missing from these API's, and when this happens Wot Numbers will either be using default data or the data will be missing.
You can look for updated tank data running the setting menu: "Download and Update Tanks". If tank data still is missing, you can manually add tank information by right click on a tank from the Tank view and select: "Edit Tank Info".
If new tank data are fetched or edited manually, run from settings menu: "Recalculate Tank Data" and "Recalculate Battle Ratings" to update your tank/battle data.
Wot Numbers logs all critical errors by default, and it can be useful to check the log file if any problem occurs.
It can be useful change the log settings to "Debug mode", this providing extended logging and can be helpful when troubleshooting. Select the Settings menu + Application Settings, and turn on the "Debug Mode" checkbox.
The log is named "Log.txt" and can be found here:
Alternatively use Windows Explorer and add this to the address bar: %appdata%/Wot Numbers/Log
It is highly recomended to use Notepad++ for viewing the log file. Open the Log.txt file using Notepad++ and select menu: "Language" and then submenu "J" + "Java". The log file text will then be colored, like the sample below (here using a dark theme) showing logging with debug mode enabled:
A log file can be quite large after a while, remember to scroll to the bottom to see latest loggings. When errors are logged this will be quite visible in a separate section with text: ### EXCEPTION ### after the timestamp, see example below.
What to do if I find errors in my log file?
By reading the error message in the log file you might be able to find a solution by searching our forum. If you cannot find any solution, please make a topic with the "bug" category, and include relevant part of the log file.
Include the complete exeption message and some lines above and after. That makes it possible for developers to figure out the situation when the error occured.
If the problem is related to reading battle data (dossier file or battle file), please follow this instruction explained here:
This is what you can do if Wot Numbers does not show new battles in the battle view, or if an error message shows up after each battle.
Remember that Wot Numbers are not able to get "old" battles. You have to install Wot Numbers and keep it running while you play World of Tanks to get battle results.
The easy method
Normally this three step method is enough to fix the problem:
The thorough method
If Wot Numbers still no not fetch battles, try this:
